Damage to Property - Tignish

At shortly after 10:00 PM on Saturday the 18th day of October 2014, the West Prince Detachment of the RCMP responded to a complaint of ATVs doing damage at a property in Tignish. Once on the scene the Officers learned that numerous ATVs had damaged the property by doing "donuts", and the like, on the lawn area. The RCMP wishes to advise the public that this act does not appear to be "random" in nature.

The investigation is on-going and the public's assistance is being requested to identify potential suspects. Please call your local RCMP Detachment if you have any information about this incident, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Telephone Fraud - Summerside

Summerside Police are warning members of the public about a telephone scam that has been reported involving a senior in the community. Fraudsters, believed based out of Jamaica, convinced a senior citizen he had won thirty eight million dollars and a Mercedes vehicle through an on line lottery. Mail Scam

RCMP Commercial Crime Section wishes to advise the public of the return of an older fraud scam that has been received recently by numerous local citizens.

The scam letter is being received through the mail and appears to be originating from Africa. The letter is addressed directly to the intended victims and their name is pasted directly into the greeting of the scam letter. The letter advises of the recent death of an individual, that by chance has the same last name as the intended victim. The fraudster then advises that since there is no surviving next of kin and that because the person receiving the letter has the same last name; they claim they can share in a percentage of the estate with the fraudster. This by it's self should sound suspicious to the recipient. The phone/fax numbers used in the scam have varied in some of the reports and most probably are "throw away" numbers.

In most cases, any correspondence that talks of the opportunity to share in large wealth either by providing a certain amount of cash, cashing a cheque or money order issued to another person/third party or an overpayment of services rendered via a cheque or money order is indicative of a "West African Fraud Letter" type scam. Cpl. Troy MacLEAN advises, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don't fall victim to these types of scams." In most cases if correspondence is initiated with these scammers they will require you to forward money via a wire transfer. If you engage this activity, once a wire transfer is sent overseas, it is usually to a fictitious person and virtually impossible to recover any losses. "We used to say buyer beware, but now we remind people "wire beware"".

Police advise if you receive a letter or e-mail of this type, do not reply and send it directly to the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre ( previously known as Phonebusters) at info@antifraudcentre.ca, toll free at 1-888-495-8501 or 1-888-654-9426(fax). The antifraud centre has a resource page directly related to this scam and may be found at this address:
